Frequently Asked Questions
So, who's behind this anyway?
Due to personal reasons, I would for the moment like to remain anonymous. My identity will be revealed in due time. For now, just let the matter rest. It is not important anyway. I kindly ask anyone who knows my identity, or can find it out, to not reveal it yet. Thank you. What's the score with this Rainforest site that Scoundrel takes me to every day?I like the rainforest. If you do too, why don't you just click on that "donate land"-button? It's not that hard and Scoundrel will remind you to do it every day. If you feel up for it, why don't you click around on the other sites too? Scoundrel is in no way affiliated with therainforestsite.com or any of its related sites. But Scoundrel likes therainforestsite. Isn't this a bot? Will I get banned if I use it on a Napster server? You might get banned. The original reason for Napster introducing the bot-rule was, I believe, to stop third parties from running programs like the Media Enforcer and other Napster-damaging clients. You can argue that Scoundrel is indeed a bot, but it actually isn't in the same sense as I believe for example Media Enforcer to be. Scoundrel "only" issues some searches and download requests. It doesn't try to map all Napster users or anything like that. What are the system requirements? You need to be running windows 95/nt4 or later with Internet Explorer 4.0 or later installed. However, they probably don't like it too much when people connect to their service with other-than-the-original Windows clients. So I guess we'll get kicked out soon enough. Enjoy it while it lasts... ;) Is this stuff legal?Scoundrel was conceived as a means to easily get mp3'd versions of records you already own. Perhaps you've already bought the album from Amazon and are anxious to get those tunes faster than the mail can deliver, perhaps you don't want to pay for CD-ripping software and can thus not rip your own CDs or perhaps your entire CD-collection is stored in a Shurgard storage facility in western Pennsylvania. So, apparently there are tons of totally legitimate uses for Scoundrel (at least if you consider having mp3-versions of your CDs legal, which I believe it to be), which is why it is distributed here. As with anything in this world, it can of course be abused. You are not allowed to do that. Copyright infringement is illegal and scoundrel has no way of determining if the files it is downloading are truly yours to download or not. The client is distributed here in the good faith that you will use it for legal purposes only. |
