Welcome to my small collection of Greek resources. I recently re-posted this page, so I could maintain its rank in Google. I was studying Attic Greek with a group on the Internet [greekstudy@vlists.net], using Hansen & Quinn's grammar. There are some links below to some of the Excercises from that book. Someday, I hope to finish the set.
Personally, I began studying Greek in the 9th grade, and then more thoroughly in my first term of college in 1991, and it has been an ongoing passion of mine ever since, leading to a BA and MA in related subjects. After realizing that I was not likely to make a great living as a Greek student, I pursued my other passion: computer programming. I've just completed (in 2003) an MS degree in Software Engineering, and presently work as a Software Development Engineer for a tech company in the San Francisco bay area.
Below are the resources I've compiled so far. If you have suggestions, recommendations, critiques (especially if you notice any typographical errors in the Greek passages -- or my English -- please, please, please, point them out to me so that I can correct them), or any other feedback, please email me.
Hansen & Quinn Greek Texts: These pages contain the Greek text of the Drills, Exercises, and Readings of the current version of Hansen & Quinn. They are presented here for possible use by members of the Greek list and anyone else who may want an electronic version. They are formated in Unicode UTF-8, as both HTML and plaintext (TXT) file types. You should be able to copy and paste from these pages directly into any UTF-8 capable editor (such as MS Word, MS Notepad, Kirk's Unicorn, etc.). ----- There are two versions of each Unit's material, one without macrons, and one with macrons. If you're really bored, read my short essay on the use of macrons in Greek studies.
Instructional Texts
Greek Lessons, by Alpheus Crosby (c. 1849): These lessons are based upon the Anabasis of Xenophon. The text includes a preface, a very large set of reading passages, extensive annotations keyed to the passages, a set of English-to-Greek translation exercises, and a large vocabulary (lexicon) at the end. It also has a large number of cross references to Crosby's grammar (see below). ----- This is a large PDF file (9.5 MB zipped) scanned by Berel Beyer for the benefit of the everyone on the Greek List. The PDF file is 60 pages, with two original book pages per PDF page. If this file is too large to download for anyone, I could post it in smaller chunks. Please let me know.
A Grammar of the Greek Language, by Alpheus Crosby (1860 edition): This is an old-style grammar, which will probably be somewhat difficult for a modern student of Greek to read, but it is quite thorough. It is divided into 4 books, titled: (1) Orthography and Orthoepy, (2) Etymology, (3) Syntax, and (4) Prosody. Plus a lexicon and several pages of citations from the Anabasis. ----- This is a large PDF file (35.3 MB zipped), 456 pages. If this file is too large to download for anyone, I could post it in smaller chunks. Please let me know.
Polytonic Greek Font
Palatino Linotype (with combining macron and breve): This is the regular Palatino Linotype font with two extra glyphs added coded to Unicode 0304h and 0306h, which are the codes for the combining macron and breve. This will eliminate the "whorls" that otherwise will appear if you read Greek texts with macrons and/or breves. The font is named 'Palatino Linotype2'. There is no need to uninstall the regular version. ----- This is a ZIP file (977 KB) containing the four variations of the font (plain, bold, italic, and bold italic). Please review the Linotype license at the Linotype Library web site before downloading this zip file.
